Tennis: ACU's Mongin named player of week

Abilene Christian's Julia Mongin was named Lone Star Conference Tennis Players of the Week for their efforts, the league office announced today.

Mongin piled up a 5-1 record last week to lead the seventh-ranked Wildcats to a 2-1 record with wins over Lone Star Conference rivals Tarleton State (8-1) and Northeastern State (7-2) ... ACU’s only loss during the week was a 4-3 loss to  SMU, which is ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division I tennis, and Mongin suffered her only loss of the week as she and partner, Jaclyn Walker, lost to SMU’s No. 1 doubles team. ... Mongin, however, won her match at No. 2 singles against SMU’s Aleksandra Malyarchikova, winning 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. ... She also won at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles against Tarleton State and No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles against Northeastern State.

    Elizabeta Abramovic, Central Oklahoma, had an impressive start of the season, she won 6 matches out of 8 including a win against #46 Aurey Thompkins from St. Edwards.

The ACU women’s team has won seven of its last eight matches with the only loss in that stretch a 4-3 loss to SMU on March 12. ... SMU entered the match ranked No. 22 in the nation in NCAA Division I tennis. ... In those seven wins, the Wildcats’ closest victory was a 7-2 win over Lee College on March 5 and a 7-2 win over Northeastern State on March 13. ... ACU is 14-3 on the season with nine of their wins coming via shutout. ... UCO improved to 7-1 on the year and 1-0 in the league with its second straight 5-4 win.  The Bronchos don’t return to action until going to Denver, Colo. March 18-20 for four matches.

Tarleton State   
The TexAnns split their conference-opening matches this week, downing Cameron 6-3 before falling 8-1 to seventh-ranked Abilene Christian. Rocio Cabanillas, Jade Charlot, Carole Julen and Evengiya Prokofeva each their respective singles matches with Cameron while Prokofeva came away with the only win against ACU. The TexAnns return to action again on March 25 when Tarleton hosts East Central at the Tarleton Tennis Courts in Stephenville.
