Commissioner Stan Wagnon is in his seventh year as a staff member of the Lone Star Conference, a 15-member NCAA Division II athletics conference with headquarters in Richardson, Texas. He was appointed in January 2007 to his current post, becoming just the second full-time commissioner in league history.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Wagnon joined the LSC as Director of Media Relations in April 2003, and then gained the title of Assistant Commissioner prior to the 2004-05 academic year. He stepped in as Acting Commissioner in January 2006 when long-time commissioner Fred Jacoby was placed on medical leave and was named Interim Commissioner in June 2006 when Jacoby retired.
Wagnon serves as chief administrative officer and primary spokesman of the Conference. He works as an advisor to each of the Conference's governance groups and is responsible for managing the budget, scheduling and arranging Conference meetings, and preparing and distributing sports schedules, in addition to planning and overseeing all daily operations for the Conference.
As commissioner, Wagnon has supervised the Conference's expanding role in the area of rules compliance. He has led a number of initiatives aimed at improving internal relations throughout the league, including a thorough revision of the league's constitution, bylaws and operating codes, plus the implementation of online video exchange for coaches and officials and the addition of a "Members Only" section on the LSC website to enhance communication.
He organized a 75-year anniversary campaign for the Conference in 2006 and has since implemented preseason media days for football and basketball and initiated the use of a full-time photographer at all Conference championship events - plus online video coverage of those events through the LSC website - as part of his efforts to increase exposure for the league. He played a key role in the conference's recent decision to admit the University of the Incarnate Word for membership, a move that will expose the LSC to one of the nation's fastest growing large cities.
Wagnon has enhanced the student-athlete experience with the addition of an annual summer retreat for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which was recognized in 2008 with a $5,000 special recognition grant from the NCAA Planning and Finance Committee. Under Wagnon's direction, conference championships now have post-game apparel for the winning teams and gifts and mementos for all participants. Additionally, he oversaw a new program in 2009 in which former student-athletes received more than $10,000 in degree-completion scholarships.
He has successfully negotiated multiple agreements in which the LSC basketball, golf, and softball tournaments have been greatly improved by playing at neutral sites in coordination with local organizing committees. In 2009, he helped the conference reach an agreement to participate annually in the Kanza Bowl, one of just two postseason football bowl games in Division II.
Now in his second year on the NCAA Nominating Committee, Wagnon is a member of the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association and serves on the CCA's Legislative Committee. He's entering his first year of service on the Division II men's basketball regional advisory committee.
Wagnon came to the LSC office after working in the sports information offices at three LSC member institutions. He served as Sports Information Director at Tarleton State for nearly three years after serving four years in a similar role at Midwestern State. He held the title of Assistant Athletic Director at MSU. Before that, Wagnon was a student assistant in the SID office at Central Oklahoma.
Wagnon performed in 2003 and '04 as tournament manager for NCAA Division II men's basketball regionals - also serving in 1999 as media relations director at a basketball regional - and worked in 1996 on the Press Information Team at the wrestling venue of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. He has served as NCAA game administrator for a 2003 men's soccer national quarterfinal and 2008 men's basketball regional.
Wagnon, 35, earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from UCO in 1995 and completed more than 30 hours of graduate work at Midwestern. He lives in Frisco, Texas, with his wife, Jill, and daughter, Abby. They are both active at The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson.
Wagnon's father, Skip, was a long-time athletic director at the University of Central Oklahoma and a 2004 inductee to the LSC Hall of Honor.
