Jay Poerner was appointed in September 2005 as the Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Internal Operations for the Lone Star Conference.
As an assistant commissioner, Poerner monitors compliance issues at member institutions, handles rules interpretations and oversees the handling of rules violations. He also administers the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program along with squad lists and eligibility and competition reports.
He has implemented monthly conference calls and newsletters as ways to reinforce rules education and works with an outside consultant to coordinate the LSC's on-campus compliance review program.
Poerner works closely with the LSC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has been instrumental in starting and coordinating the annual SAAC Summer Retreat.
Recently appointed to the regional advisory committee for NCAA Division II Men's Soccer, Poerner administers various Conference grant programs, also helping to create online reporting for these programs. He served on the LSC Handbook Committee that recently recommended a thorough revision of the LSC's constitution, bylaws and operating codes as well.
Before being named assistant commissioner, Poerner served an internship with the LSC as an assistant to the commissioner from February 2004 through August 2005. The former Southern Methodist University basketball standout gained experience by assisting with the development of sports schedules, charting reports for competition and eligibility, plus helping to manage conference championship events and the league's NLI reporting.
While a student-athlete, Poerner excelled as an SMU Mustang, twice being voted team captain and three times leading his squad in scoring to be named the team's Most Valuable Player. A member of SMU's SAAC, Poerner was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference pick and finished his playing career as the ninth-leading scorer in SMU history.
Poerner, who earned a bachelor's degree from SMU in 1998, went on to play four seasons of professional basketball, including stints with Aichi Kikai of the Japanese Basketball League, Seimens Gent of the Belgian Basketball Association and South Dakota Gold of the International Basketball Association.
A native of San Antonio, Poerner now lives in Addison, Texas, with his wife, Dana, and daughter, Reese.
